Given the thirteen-episode limit, the creators of Air could not develop the legend of the winged beings fully in the anime series. Therefore, in August and September, 2005, two episodes were aired in Japan as the Air: Summer Special. In this two episodes, the beginning of the legend of the winged beings os explained in depth, and so many confusing plot points of the anime start to make sense.
During these two episodes, we see how the last of the winged beings is imprissonned in a cave, feared for her magical powers, and her baby daughter, Kanna, is locked away as well, in a castle not far away. As the years go by, Kanna becomes a young woman, but even though she is very comfortable at the castle and has everything she could ever need, she misses her freedom and is not allowed to fly or leave the castle at any time. In addition, she knows her mother is suffering somewhere nearby, and Kanna feels the need to meet her and free her. Together with one of the royal guards, Ryuuya, and her personal servant and friend, Uraha, they escape from the castle looking for Kanna's mother, in a charming and touching adventure that will be the beggining of the ancient curse that will haunt Misuzu.
